A Clinical trial on the effect on Vaginal Acidity of oral probiotics in the treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis in MCU-FDTMF Hospital Obstetrics & Gynecology OPD Department

OBJECTIVE
To ascertain the efficacy in increasing vaginal acidity of available oral probiotics in the Philippine market with 200 million colony forming units/ capsule, which contains Lactobacillus Rhamnosus, in the treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis.

METHODOLOGY
This study used a double blind method; a method where subjects were randomized as Group A (experimental group) and Group B (control group).The Experimental group was given oral Metronidazole and probiotics(Protexin) while the Control group was given oral Metronidazole only.
 
DISCUSSION AND RESULTS
There were 30 subjects in the study, 15 subjects in each treatment allocation group. shows the level of vaginal pH after the treatment using  Metronidazole with Lactobacilli compared to Metronidazole only in Patients diagnosed to have Bacterial Vaginosis revealed that 100% of the population under group A who were treated with combination of Metronidazole and Lactobacilli had an acidic vaginal pH after the treatment. On the other hand, majority of the population under group B who were treated with Metronidazole had an acidic vaginal pH after the treatment, while 13.3% of the population of the said group had basic vaginal pH after treatment.

The level of vaginal pH of population under Group A who took a combination of Metronidazole and Lactobacilli before and after treatment shows that 100% of the treatment population had a basic vaginal pH before treatment and 100% of the same population had a significant change of vaginal pH to acidic vaginal milieu as compared to Group B who took Metronidazole only before and after treatment which showed that 100% of the treatment population had a basic vaginal pH before treatment and only 86.6% of the same population had a significant change of vaginal pH to acidic and the remaining 13.3% of the said population, did not have a change in vaginal acidity despite treatment of infectious agent causing Bacterial vaginosis. The results above shows a significant increase in vaginal acidity of patients under Group A who took a combination of Metronidazole and Lactobacilli as all subjects in this group were noted to have changed vaginal pH as compared to group B who took Metronidazole only as treatment for bacterial vaginosis.
 
CONCLUSION
The results of this study revealed that the combination of Metronidazole and Protexin in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis may be effective both in treating the infectious agent and in increasing the vaginal acidity  and may be used for treating the infectious agent causing Bacterial vaginosis,
 
Protexin Balance is recommended at 1-2 capsules daily for 10 to 15 days or as needed.
