The Truth about the Health Benefits and Risks of Probiotics

Date: November 03, 2016

Prebiotech Health Products Philippines cares enough to ensure that our Protexin line of Probiotics products fully meet the expected health outcomes of our customers.  We take time benchmarking and validating our research and marketing efforts with recommendations from health experts around the world.

This week we share objective advice on Probiotics by Arefa Cassoobhoy (MD, MPH).  She is a member of the medical editorial team of WebMD, a multi-awarded health information website.

As mentioned in her two short introductory videos entitled “The Truth about Probiotics and our Gut”, Probiotics are good bacteria that live in the human gut, preventing certain illnesses affecting our digestive system and over-all immunity from diseases.  Natural sources include dairy products like milk and yoghurt and fermented food like Kimchi.  Convenient supplement forms are now available in pharmacies and mainstream stores.

Probiotics are proven to be effective in shortening the duration of infectious diarrhea, including those induced because of the use of antibiotics.  Probiotics are commonly recommended with the regular treatment prescribed by physicians, especially for at risk groups like babies, children, and the elderly.

Although Probiotics are natural supplements that are generally regarded as safe, Dr. Cassoobhoy notes caution in certain cases.  Gas and bloating, allergic reaction, may occur.  Live bacteria could cause some harm if you have a problem with your immune system.  In these cases, patients should seek medical advice.
